Apple Sonker

Apple Mixture
  • 3-4 cups dried apples
  • water
  • sugar
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • heavy cream
  1. Prepare the apple mixture: Place dried apples in a large saucepan and cover with water. Simmer until tender. Add sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to taste. Cool mixture.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  3. Melt 2 sticks of butter and pour into a 9x12 baking dish.
  4. Mix together 2 cups of sugar, 2 cups of self-rising flour, and 2 cups of milk. Pour this batter on top of the melted butter. Do not stir!
  5. Scatter the apple mixture across the top of the batter. Again, do not stir!
  6. Bake approximately 45 minutes, or until top is golden brown and fork comes out clean.
  7. Serve warm with heavy cream poured over each serving.
