Fort Fisher's 2019 Beat the Heat Summer Lecture Series

Event Description

Fort Fisher's 2019 Beat the Heat Summer Lecture Series continues with 'Federal Point Lighthouses,' as presented by Fort Fisher interpreter Becky Sawyer.

By the late 18th century, the residents of the Lower Cape Fear River petitioned Congress for a needed navigational marker for to assist ships entering New Inlet. For the next 100 years, a navigational lighted beacon was used on the tip of Federal Point to help these ships traverse the channel of New Inlet. During the Civil War, the lighthouse was destroyed and the Keeper’s house was used a Fort Fisher’s headquarters. Join us as Fort Fisher staff member Becky Sawyer explores the history of the Federal Point Lighthouses. The presentation is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Please call the site at 910-251-7340 to reserve a seat. The presentation will begin promptly at 2 pm in the Spencer Theater. All Fort Fisher programming is made possible by the Friends of Fort Fisher and its sustaining members, along with generous support from the town of Carolina Beach and the town of Kure Beach.
