This Old Cabin: The Story of Log Buildings Workshop at Vance Birthplace

Event Description

Have you ever wanted to touch the artifact at a museum? Now is your chance! Our buildings are artifacts!

The Vance Birthplace State Historic Site, along with the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County, are excited to offer a series of workshops highlighting the historic buildings that make up the Vance family farmstead. The Vance family and eighteen enslaved people lived and worked on the farm from the early 1790s to the late 1830s.

Visit the site during one of these workshops and learn about the history of the property and the craftsmanship of the buildings.  Hone your skills or learn some new ones through the lens of our structures!

For our May Workshop, we are excited to welcome Jennifer Cathey, Restoration Specialist with the State Historic Preservation Office, as she discusses the history of log buildings. This workshop will cover the types and development of log buildings and includes a walking tour of the Vance Birthplace State Historic Site.
