This short guided night hike at Horton Grove will lead you from the Horton Grove slave quarters through a nearby trail. Along the way, the group will pause for moments of reflection to read and reflect on excerpts from North Carolina slave narratives. These passages reveal how enslaved North Carolinians used night as a time for refuge and resistance. As we finish our trail walk, you will be able to view the rising full moon at Horton Grove.
Come prepared for night walking and weather! We'll meet at sunset and hike as the night darkens. We will walk about 1.3 miles at a slow pace, with multiple stops along the way. The walking is over dirt and grass trails, with tree roots and no major elevation change.
Please wear sturdy walking shoes, and bring your own headlamp or flashlight. Our staff can provide some extra lights. We will intentionally pause and observe in darkness at several points during the program.
