This short guided night hike at Horton Grove will lead you from the Horton Grove slave quarters through a nearby trail. During our walk, we will focus on seeing, sensing, and listening to the darkness of the forest at night. Along the way, the group will pause for moments of reflection to read excerpts from North Carolina slave narratives. How did enslaved North Carolinians used night as a time for refuge and resistance? As we finish the trail walk, you will be able to view the rising full moon at Horton Grove.
We invite you to linger for quiet reflection or Q and A with our guides after the hike ends.
Come prepared for night walking and weather! This event is intended for adults and those ages 12 and up. We'll meet at sunset and hike as the night darkens. We will walk about 1.3 miles at a slow pace, with multiple stops along the way. The walking is over dirt and grass trails, with tree roots and no major elevation change.
Please wear sturdy walking shoes, and bring your own headlamp or flashlight. No restrooms are available on the site. Our staff can provide some extra lights. We will intentionally pause and turn off all lights to be in darkness at several points during the program.
