This short guided night hike will lead you from the historic Horton Grove slave quarters through a nearby trail. During our walk, we will focus on seeing, listening, and sensing the forest at night. Along the way, your guide will pause for moments of reflection to read excerpts from North Carolina slave narratives. Discover how did enslaved North Carolinians used night as a time for refuge and resistance. As we finish the trail walk, you will view the rising full moon at Horton Grove.
We invite you to linger for quiet reflection, or Q and A with our guides, after the hike ends.
Come prepared for night walking and weather! This event is intended for adults and those ages 12 and up. We'll meet at sunset and hike as the night darkens. We will walk about 1.3 miles at a slow pace, with stops along the way. The walking is over dirt and grass trails, with uneven surfaces and no major elevation change.
Please wear sturdy walking shoes, and bring your own headlamp or flashlight. No restrooms are available on the site. We will intentionally pause and turn off all lights to be in darkness at several points during the program.
