This short guided night hike will lead you from the historic Horton Grove slave quarters through a nearby trail. During our walk, we will focus on seeing, listening, and sensing the forest at night. Along the way, your guide will pause for moments of reflection to read excerpts from North Carolina slave narratives. Discover how enslaved North Carolinians used night as a time for refuge and resistance. As we finish the trail walk, you will view the rising full moon at Horton Grove.

We invite you to linger for quiet reflection, or history Q and A with our guides, after the hike ends.

Come prepared for night walking and weather! We'll meet at sunset and hike as the night darkens. We will walk about 1.3 miles at a slow pace, with stops along the way.
