Handwriting of the Heart: Valentine Workshop at Vance Birthplace

Portraits of a man and a woman from the 1840s over the text of a historic letter

Get a little inspiration for your Valentine this year!  Drop by the site throughout the day to create your own love letter at this free workshop.

During the two years before their 1853 wedding, Zebulon Vance and Harriet Espy exchanged over 100 love letters.  Using Hattie and Zeb's words as inspiration, craft a valentine for your own beloved!  Try out a vintage salutation, make a stab at quill pen writing or calligraphy, and finish your letter with a wax seal.
