Registered Scouts will have the opportunity to complete all requirements needed to earn the “Mining in Society” merit badge at Reed Gold Mine’s merit badge workshop.
The workshop begins with a PowerPoint presentation and class time to finish the sections of the “Mining in Society” merit badge workbook. After completing the in-class portion, Scouts will be taken on a guided tour of the underground mine and learn about Reed Gold Mine’s history and learn more about the gold mining process. Following that, weather permitting, Scouts will be able to pan for gold in the outdoor panning area.
There is a $15 registration fee per Scout, which includes the cost of the workshop, tour, and one panning ticket (weather permitting). Adult leaders and chaperones who wish to pan with their Scouts can purchase a panning ticket in the gift shop. Panning tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis and are $2.14 after tax. Adult leaders and chaperones may also buy a tour ticket if they’re interested in going on the guided tour of the underground mine. Tour tickets are $2.00 for adults 13 and older.
In 2025, “Mining in Society” merit badge workshops will be offered on May 10th, June 14th, July 12th, August 9th, September 13th, October 11th, and November 8th. Each workshop begins at 10:00 am and runs until 2:00 pm and is limited to 60 participants.
