Join staff and volunteers from Historic Stagville, Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, and the Chapel Hill Astronomical and Observational Society for meteor viewing on the peak night of the Geminid meteor shower!

This outdoor event will take place in the open field at the Horton Grove entrance of Historic Stagville State Historic Site.

Due to the high volume of people and limited parking, please carpool if possible.

All you need to view meteors are your eyes, but we’ll also have telescopes for you to view Saturn, Jupiter, and other celestial sights. This event is weather permitting.

Register to attend and receive updates about this event.

What to Bring

A blanket or chairs so you can sit and relax.

A small flashlight to help you walk across the field, but you might find that avoiding all light and letting your eyes adjust to the darkness is more beneficial. Red light is best to protect your night vision.

Due to the high volume of people and limited parking, please carpool if possible.

Know Before You Go

Parking will be available in a grass field. Enter from Jock Road and look for the parking volunteers to direct your vehicle. Follow directions carefully to ensure you park safely.

This is an informal session, so you can arrive and leave any time during the program.

This is an outdoor event, so dress for the weather. Port-a-johns are available near the program site. The Stagville visitors center at 5828 Old Oxford Highway will be closed.

All ages are welcome.

In case of inclement weather, site staff will contact attendees by email about event changes or cancellation.
