Somerset Place - Becoming American: The Life, Service and Sacrifice of Colonel Edward Buncombe

Somerset Place will explore the ways in which Tyrrell County's (formerly Washington County) hero of the American Revolution, Col. Edward Buncombe became American by choice. Local historian, Chris Barber, will discuss Colonel Buncombe, of the 5th Regiment of the North Carolina Brigade, service in the Continental Line and the circumstances he encountered throughout a ten-year period (1768 -1778) with his remarkable life’s story.  Colonel Buncombe was injured in the October 4, 1777, Battle of Germantown (the Philadelphia Campaign), taken prisoner to Philadelphia by the British, paroled but required to remain in the city.  Having never obtained proper medical care, he died and was buried on May 17, 1778, in Christ Church Cemetery, Philadelphia.  Admission is $5.00 for adults $2 for children.
