This summer, North Carolina Historic Sites is initiating a pilot program across 13 of our 27 sites to offer Sunday hours. Currently, most sites operate Tuesday-Saturday. Funding for this time-limited, exploratory program was provided by the N.C. General Assembly.

Pilot Sites: Aycock Birthplace, Historic Bath, Bentonville Battlefield, Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson, Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum, Historic Edenton, Fort Fisher, Historic Halifax, Reed Gold Mine, Roanoke Island Festival Park, Somerset Place, State Capitol, and Thomas Day State Historic Site.

Program dates: June 14 - August 2, 2026

Hours of operation: 1-5 p.m.

Here are the selected sites in each geographic region:

Piedmont: North Carolina State Capitol, Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum, Thomas Day State Historic Site

West: Reed Gold Mine

Note: The NC Transportation Museum is regularly open on Sundays from 12-5 p.m.
 

Activities will vary by site, but all sites will offer access to the visitor center, gift shop, historic buildings, and grounds. We suggest calling prior to your visit to ask about guided tours or other Sunday offerings. Requests for rentals on Sundays are dependent on staffing and require special approval. 

The sites that are included in this pilot program were selected by the NC General Assembly. 

Any permanent expansion of visiting hours at NC Historic Sites is dependent on funding from the General Assembly.
