Volunteer and Internship Opportunities

Are you interested in a volunteer or intern opportunity? If you have some free time and are interested in history and/or connecting with the community, we offer many projects and enriching experiences. If you are interested in helping but unsure how to contribute, please feel free to drop by or call us. We would be happy to discuss different options with you. We offer unpaid internships year-round, and our internship opportunities for college students are on Handshake. We also offer internships for college credit. Please email Rachel at rachel.kennedy@dncr.nc.gov if you would like to discuss internship opportunities.

CSS Neuse Museum Education and Programming Internship Opportunity

The CSS Neuse Museum is seeking two fall interns to assist with programming and education this summer. Interns will learn about aspects of informal education at the museum, including public and homeschool programs, community outreach, and special events. This internship is appropriate for those seeking a professional informal/traditional or informal/nontraditional education field.

What will you be doing as an intern?

  • Learn how non-formal education complements and supports formal or traditional education by correlating to and going beyond NC Essential Standards.
  • Develop public speaking and presentation skills by engaging visitors of all ages in the museum through guided tours and field trips.
  • Assist with summer field trips, including providing hands-on activities that are history and science-based. 
  • Research additional information essential to the museum's mission and add the content to our audio tour. 
  • Create an education-based project based on your interests, such as a game, scavenger hunt, or other educational resource.
  • Learn to provide guided touch tours and talks to special-needs groups. 
  • Research historical information, create documents in Word and Excel, and create forms using Constant Contact and Google Forms. 
  • Learn customer service skills and cash management skills. 
  • Assist with marketing, coordinating, and hosting special events at the museum. 
  • Learn to use office equipment like a laminator and copy machine correctly and safely. 
  • All interns will need to complete an independent project based on the following:
    • Create interactive adventure backpacks for families to utilize during their visit to the museum.
    • Update all educational resources, including the field trip brochure, educator information on the site’s website, scavenger hunt, etc., for the 2024-2025 school year. 
    • Research information on the 35th USCT during the Civil War and compile a spreadsheet with information including letters, photographs, etc., and create a way to display the information in the museum.  
    • Design and present a supplemental activity for adult and youth field trips. 

General Internship Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 as the internship application due date.
  • Applicants should currently be enrolled in an applicable college program or have received a degree in a field related to the desired placement and be in good academic standing. 
  • The intern must arrange all housing and transportation – the CSS Neuse Museum does not provide it as part of the internship.
  • All applicants must apply and provide, via email, a cover letter and a resume. The intern will receive a name tag, and an intern work shirt will be supplied at no cost. 
  • Enthusiastic about history, research, museum studies, and engaging with guests. Willing to learn and work independently and as a team. 
  • Internship opportunities are unpaid, and housing opportunities are unavailable. 

For Credit or Experience

  • Credit internships—135 hrs. or however many hours your university requires, whichever is higher. The academic advisor or class professor must sign off to approve credit (including the project).
  • Non-credit/experience internships—120 hrs. (includes project). Does not need a signature

  • A resume or curriculum vitae, including previous experience, skills (foreign languages, technology, etc.), and relevant extracurricular activities.

  • Lesson plans
  • Research projects to add diverse stories to our audio tour
  • Creating accessibility options for visitors of all ages
  • Spanish translation of multiple Museum documents, including our scavenger hunt 
  • Program planning
  • Community engagement and outreach
  • Research and creation of a Victorian mourning practices booklet for visitors  
  • Scavenger hunts for multiple age groups
  • Public Speaking and organizing field trips 
  • Activity backpacks for families
