Pre-visit Activities

1. Students should read the chapters of The North Carolina Civil War Experience on The Road to Secession which offers details on slavery in North Carolina.

2. Students should read the Site Narrative: The Civil War Experience at Somerset provided in this unit which describes how the Civil War impacted the lives of the residents of Somerset Place, both white and black, free and enslaved.

3. Teachers may use any of the activities in the Supplemental Lesson Plan: Investigating Wartime at Somerset through Primary Sources as a pre-visit activity or a stand-alone classroom lesson. Classes preparing for a field trip to the site should familiarize themselves with the Site Map and the Glossary of Terms prior to their visit.
