exterior of the State Capitol

The North Carolina State Capitol, completed in 1840, is one of the finest and best-preserved examples of a major civic building in the Greek Revival style of architecture. It is a National Historic Landmark.

SPECIAL NOTICE: The State Capitol will undergo restoration beginning in September 2019. The scope of this project includes painting, roof and plaster repair, restoration of historic decorative finishes, and stone cleaning. Work is expected to last 6-9 months. The building will remain open to the public, however, for the safety of visitors and staff, certain areas will be closed while work is underway and tours may be limited. We thank you for your patience and appreciate your understanding as we work to ensure the State Capitol maintains its historic appearance and continues to serve generations of North Carolinians to come.
