The North Carolina State Capitol, completed in 1840, is one of the finest and best-preserved examples of a major civic building in the Greek Revival style of architecture. It is the active capitol of the state and a National Historic Landmark.

Hours and Location

Visitors are welcome to take self-guided tours of the building Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. -5 p.m. and *Sundays, 1-5 p.m. 

*Sunday hours are part of a time-limited, pilot program offered June 14- August 2, 2026. The Capitol will be closed July 5. Additional information can be found on the pilot program page.

Free public guided tours are available on Saturdays at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. No reservations are needed for Saturday tours, which are first come, first serve. Parking for the Capitol is available at metered spaces around the square or in the NC Museum/Government Center parking lot located at 100 E Jones St. All group tours and field trips are scheduled through Capital Area Visitor Services.
