Fort Fisher will commemorate its 158th anniversary with the program, 'With Artillery, War is Made,' Saturday, January 14, 2023 from 10 am - 4 pm. Free and open to the public, this living history program will focus on the artillery at Fort Fisher during the American Civil War. At 10 am, 12 noon, 1:30 pm, and 3 pm, there will be demonstrations of the 32-pounder banded and rifled seacoast gun, the 12-pound Napoleon, and a 10-pound Parrott gun. Living history displays will be set up in the Fort Grove.
Visit Bennett Place during the Christmas season and witness how this occasion was celebrated in the Piedmont Carolinas during the American Civil War. Living historians will decorate the farm in a typical modest fashion of the time. There will be cooking demonstrations in the kitchen house, Christmas decorations and packages in the main house, soldiers will be on hand to demonstrate Christmas in the field and of course, a visit with Ole St. Nick. Complimentary hot apple cider will be available. There will also be a bake sale where you can purchase some sweet treats.
In 1752, the American colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar, resulting in the beloved date of Christmas - January 5th - being moved to December 25th. In rebellion, some North Carolinians began to celebrate both dates. Bring your family and join us during the week after Christmas for crafts, games, food, and ringing in of the new year as we celebrate Old Christmas. Activities are different each day and run from 10am-3pm.
