Areas of Volunteering
Tour Guide
Greet visitors and share the history of the largest surrender of the American Civil War. Tour Guides take visitors on 30-45 minute tour of the Bennett Farm.
Living Historian
Throughout the year we have living historians military and civilians alike camp out and provide demonstrations of what life was like for the people during the time of the American Civil War. We have resources to outfit interested volunteers who would like to “live the life” of someone in the 19th century.
Library Research
The Everett-Thissen Library dedicated in 2010 maintains a collection of more than 1,000 books, manuscripts, magazines, and media resources related to the Civil War and Bennett Place. If you enjoy genealogy and research, we have a great resource here.
Gardening & Landscaping
Enjoy digging in the dirt? We have recreated the gardens as they would have been during the time the Bennett family farmed this land. We have a vegetable and herb garden as well as a cornfield, and fruit trees. Other landscaping projects are needed to enhance and care for the existing property around the visitor center, picnic area, and nature trails.
