They earned money selling goods & services to passers-by on the roadway. On November 22, Bennett Place State Historic Site brings back that entrepreneurial, small-business spirit with the Old Hillsborough Road Market. Shop from local craft, retail, and food vendors for a perfect holiday gift!

 WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST?Porridge, gruel, mush, pottage, grits, polenta and hasty pudding, what are they and how are they different? Come visit the kitchen at Polk Birthplace where we will explore these dishes, their differences and similarities, talk about their history and make a couple to compare.  As usual, we can’t share the food but will be glad to answer any questions Receipts for the demo will come from the following books ; Suggested donation $5/adult, $2/seniors and children

Join us Sept. 28  as we explore receipts from “The Raised Hearth” a translation from two 18th century German cookbooks. Our focus is going to be the wonderful potato! We will make a potato salad with a few different ingredients - sardines and beets. Another receipt will be potato soup served with toast. Also on the menu will be roast potatoes using an 18th century method, along with some roasted onions. Potatoes with milk will finish out the day. Milk was sometimes used to cook potatoes or rice instead of water.

On December 16th from 10am-4pm, Bennett Place will holding our annual Christmas in the Piedmont during the Civil War event. Witness how Soldiers and Civilians try to keep there spirits up during four years of war. On going living history will be happening around the farm, Also Santa will be in the Parlor of the Bennett house to meet and greet visitors, and you can tell him what you want for Christmas.
