Apple Cobbler
Makes one 2-quart cobbler
- 6 large apples
- 1 cup flour
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup butter, melted
Have the stove at a moderate heat, about 350°; grease and flour the baking dish. Peel, core, and slice the apple into one of the mixing bowls. In the other bowl mix together the flour, brown sugar, sugar, baking powder, and cinnamon. Beat the egg slightly and pour over the flour mixture. Stir. Put the apples into the baking dish, spoon the batter over the apples. Melt the butter in the small sauce pan on the stove; drizzle the melted butter over the batter in the baking dish. Bake the cobbler for 45 minutes.
Procedure:
Preheat stove to 350°. Assign various children to certain tasks: some to peel and slice the apples, others to measure and stir the ingredients, one to grease and flour the baking dish. While the cobbler is baking, talk to them about apples. Clean up the kitchen. Assign different children to wash, dry, and put away utensils. Wipe down the counter where you worked. Sweep the floor if necessary. When the cobbler is cooked, remove it carefully from the oven. Spoon a dollop of hot cobbler into a bowl and serve to the children. A scoop of vanilla ice cream with the hot cobbler makes it even better!
