Apples and the North Carolina Economy

Objective:

Children will learn about the importance of apples to North Carolina’s economy of 1900, apple uses, caring for an orchard, and preservation efforts to save old southern heirloom apples.

Time: 30 - 60 minutes
Presentation:

Have available a variety of fresh apples and apple products (such as dried apples, apple butter, applehead doll) to use as props.

  •      Origins of apples in North America 
  •      Importance of the Apple Boom to the economy of North Carolina in 1900
  •      Uses of apples
  •      Preparation and care of an apple orchard
  •      The Horne Creek Farm Southern Heritage Apple Orchard
